Protecting wildlife, the environment and the community from unnecessary artificial light at night.
Policy adopted 11 November 2025
Why dark skies matter
Granborough Parish Council adopted its Dark Skies Policy to minimise the unnecessary negative effects of artificial light at night on wildlife, the environment and the community. The approach reflects Buckinghamshire’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy and Local Plan guidance on mitigating lighting impacts.
How the policy is applied
When responding to relevant planning applications, the Parish Council considers whether outdoor lighting is useful, targeted, low-level, controlled and warm-coloured. It may object to excessive or inappropriate external lighting and suggest proportionate alternatives or planning conditions.
Subject to available budgets, the Council also seeks energy-efficient street lighting and promotes good lighting practices that reduce unnecessary light pollution without compromising community safety or welfare.
